Focus or Fiesta

One of the most common questions I receive from other enthusiasts is why I didn’t purchase a Focus ST over the FiST.  To me the answer comes down to one word, weight.  There is nearly a 600 pound difference between the two cars and
this comes with some significant disadvantages.  Ford did a good job compensating for the weight with power and even improved the power to weight ratio, however, power doesn’t solve all the issues.

The additional weight and power in the Focus actually cause multiple issues.  The first being increased torque steer.  Upon launching the Focus is more prone to wheel spin and simply doesn’t handle as well under acceleration.  The second and more major issue is understeer.  The Focus ST is incredibly vulnerable to understeer; it is fwd and the increase in weight can leave the Focus barreling directly ahead, ignoring all driver input.
